Hidden pandemic of postoperative complications
Postoperative complications present a massive burden for healthcare systems and societies, resulting in increased healthcare expenses, prolonged hospital stays, and suboptimal patient outcomes. On average, 5-15% of the 70 million surgical procedures carried out each year in the EU and US are complicated by these events, including postoperative infections, thrombosis, organ failure or sepsis.
These complications incur an annual cost of $31 billion in the US alone but are often poorly registered in conventional electronic health records (EHRs). The scale of the problem combined with the limited overview of its true scope, has led to the experts describing this as the “hidden pandemic”.
Healthcare systems employ various protocols such as patient monitoring, wound care, and infection control to reduce the incidence of postoperative complications. Despite these substantial efforts, it is estimated that between 50 to 70% of complications could be prevented through proper preoperative and postoperative care.

Aiomic360™ is our cutting-edge AI platform designed to provide healthcare managers and surgeons with the insights they need to make informed decisions and reduce the occurrence of postoperative complications
Aiomic360™
At Aiomic, we are on a mission to combat postoperative complications. We use artificial intelligence to field high-quality data of postoperative complications as well as provide AI-powered analyses of the drivers behind these. By enabling access to high-quality data on postoperative complication rates, we build predictive AI-algorithms to support both pre and postoperative clinical decision-making, ultimately leading to fewer and less severe complications.
Aiomic360™ is a cutting-edge AI platform designed for all stakeholders working with postoperative complications; from national organizations such as The American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), to hospital and department managements working with improving surgical quality, to front-line healthcare providers.
Our first release is the INSIGHT feature, utilizing a state-of-the-art natural language processing enhanced analyses workflow to deliver valuable insights into complications incidence and underlying causes of these. This feature also enables comparison of surgical departments and hospitals. In the future, the platform will incorporate advanced, dynamic, and retrainable predictive AI-algorithms to help surgeons identify high-risk patients enabling personalized preventive treatment.

"Postoperative complications are now a major, but under-recognised, cause of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery"
